Russian Fighting School Combines Yoga And Jujitsu

Yoga for Mixed Martial Arts is a Russian project uniting yoga techniques with jujitsu and could soon be used to help professional competitors.

Igor Lunyakov, Y4MMA founder (speaking Russian):

“This is the Y4MMA project, Yoga for Mixed Martial Arts. It was created to help people who do martial arts – sambo, judo, jujitsu, boxing or karate – to help them get a better feel for their body, make it more mobile.”

Alexander Dida Brazilian jujitsu trainer (speaking English):

“Actually in Brazil we don’t hear much about sambo. Of course we’ve heard something but we don’t have much access to video or information about sambo, just like some people here do not know about Brazilian jujitsu.”

Tatiana Illarionova, yoga trainer (speaking Russian):

“There are not just two poles – plus and minus, no. A sportsman is ready when he is calm. He can be tumultuous on the outside but quiet inside. This is what we’re working on, on the calmness inside. In this case adrenalin doesn’t get going with rare exception when you need to make some decisive actions. And a sportsman works according to his inner algorithm. So we’re working on this inner calmness.”

Story

In Russia a new project, “Yoga for Mixed Martial Arts”, combines the best aspects of these two ancient systems of perfecting one’s body and soul.

“This is Y4MMA project, Yoga for Mixed Martial Arts. It was created to help people who do martial arts – sambo, judo, jujitsu, boxing or karate – help them to get a better feel for their body, make it more mobile”, says the project’s creator Igor Lunyakov.

First it was directed towards amateurs in order to help them manage physical load and avoid injury. Now the project’s founders are planning to start training professionals.

“Actually in Brazil we don’t hear much about sambo. Of course we’ve heard something but we don’t have much access to video or information about sambo, just like some people here do not know about Brazilian jujitsu”, says Brazilian jujitsu trainer Alexander Dida.

Together with jujitsu, or Brazilian judo, Y4MMA masters use yoga in their training to aid a fighter’s concentration, inner calmness and control over the situation. Yoga is also a spiritual part of a fighter’s training in addition to his physical one.

So we’re working on this inner calmness”, says yoga trainer Tatiana Illarionova.

The techniques of “Yoga for Mixed Martial Arts” are being used by amateurs, but soon they could be part of the training program for professional fighters preparing for international competitions, including the Olympic Games.
